County and State Fair Season Begins!

Summer is in full swing, and that means county and state fair season is about to begin! In the coming weeks, fairgrounds in New York State will open their gates to fairgoers looking to fill their day with some classic summertime fun. There are plenty of fair options to choose from – eleven to be exact! – located near Amtrak stations. Here are five with some unique offerings that we think you'll enjoy:

August 11 – August 16
Altamont, NY (20.4 miles from Albany - Rensselaer Amtrak Station)

Celebrating its 122nd year, the Altamont Fair offers classic fair fun like amusement rides, agricultural shows, and food vendors, as well as something educational and unique: museum set-ups! You can take a trip back in time at the Village & Carriage Museum and experience how the Village of Altamont may have looked and felt over 100 years ago, with visits to the cobbler shop, wheelwright, sleigh repair shop, the hardware store, and more! Also, view one of upstate New York’s largest collections of horse drawn carriages.

Discover what life was really like on a farm in the “old days” at the Farmhouse Museum, and learn about the evolution of farm equipment from the 1800’s to the early 1900’s at the Farm Machinery Museum. At the Blacksmith Shop, demonstrations show you the process of making nails, hinges, sled runners, scythes, wagon wheels, and more. Visit the Wildlife Sports and Education Museum, dedicated to the preservation of the art, artifacts, and memorabilia of hunting and fishing. Follow the progress of the American automobile and view a newly refurbished 1917 Vim and a refurbished 1927 Buick at the Cars: Past, Present & Future Museum.

Families will have fun at the Circus Museum, with photos and lithographs of circuses past, and a vintage mechanical five-piece circus band. Daily children’s activities are offered at the 1850’s Knox School No. 12 one room schoolhouse.

August 12 – August 23

With an attendance last year of over one million people, the Erie County Fair is now the third largest county fair in North America! In addition to traditional fair rides and animal shows, there are plenty of unique activities for the whole family to enjoy.

Try some wacky culinary concoctions and vote for your favorite one at the New Foods Showdown, with treats such as Bacon Funnel Cake on a Stick, “Black Dog” Chocolate Donut Ice Cream Bar, Gator Mac & Cheese Bowl, and Salted Caramel Cracker Jack Sundae! Take part in the Erie County Fair 5K Run on August 15. Children can learn how to milk a pretend cow and how to drive a “tractor,” with a snack reward at the end for their hard work! Visit over 40 different buildings, each with unique offerings, such as Grapes and Hops and The Carousel Room, both offering alcoholic beverages in relaxed settings with live music, and ‘The Mall,’ home to a variety of vendors.

The Gusto Grandstand will feature concerts from big-name artists, such as 3 Doors Down, Collective Soul, Meghan Trainor, Little Big Town, Alabama, Blue Oyster Cult, and more. With so much to do, you just might have to stay more than one day!

July 28 – August 2 
Plattsburgh, NY (5.6 miles from Plattsburgh Amtrak Station)

For a more "rugged" fair experience, the Clinton County Fair has plenty of down-and-dirty daily shows such as demolition derbies, truck and tractor pulls, and rodeo shows. For the kids, there will be an interactive dinosaur, the Zerbini Family Circus, and Pipsqueak's Party Time Crew. Have fun with daily magic and illusion shows by John Steven Bloom and hypnotist Michael Blaine! North Country's Got Talent will also be stopping by to showcase the talents and abilities of locals and traveling visitors alike. This year's performance highlight is the up-and-coming country music duo Maddie & Tae on July 30.

August 25 – August 30 
Rhinebeck, NY (3.1 miles from Rhinecliff-Kingston Amtrak Station)

Many summer fairs run for 6 days, and the Dutchess County Fair is the largest fair in New York State of that length, as well as the second largest county fair in the state. Located in picturesque Rhinebeck on 144 acres of beautifully-kept gardens and grass, this fair has been a classic summertime favorite for over 160 years.

Unique attributes include the New York Fiddle Contest on August 30, the daily "Agricadabra Magic Show," Oscar the Roving Robot, lovely themed garden scenes with koi ponds and water lilies, as well as over 300 vendors selling a wide variety of items - from clothing and jewelry to household items, toys to baked goods. Don't forget to check out the buildings full of homemade crafts and hobbies as well - including detailed handcrafted quilts and intricate woodworking, as well as the old-fashioned food buildings - offering treats such as classic country store candies, honey, real maple syrup, jams and jellies, fudge, caramel and chocolate covered apples, and more!

This year's Grandstand concert performers include Cole Swindell, the Doobie Brothers, the Spin Doctors, Dan + Shay, and A Thousand Horses.

August 27 – September 7

Syracuse, NY

One of the oldest and largest state fairs in the United States, the 12-day Great New York State Fair continues to draw crowds of over one million people each year.

View the winning creations of the out-of-the-ordinary "Bucket of Junk" competition, where competitors are provided a five-gallon bucket of assorted and mismatched pieces and are asked to use every single piece to construct a unique creation. Adults will enjoy the Taste NY Wine & Cheese Seminars in the Horticulture Building, where wine and cheese samples will be provided, along with educational talks.

Visitors can also learn about the history of the New York State Fair at a brand new historical exhibit, and afterwards purchase vintage posters, pins, and other New York State Fair memorabilia from the past at the souvenir shop.

This year’s Grandstand and Chevy Court performers include big-names like Eric Church, Everclear, Melissa Etheridge, and Hank Williams, Jr.!

Hudson Valley Event Round-Up

Hudson Valley has got it all! From inspirational landscapes and historical sites to wine tasting and zip-lining, there is always something new to discover. Make sure to check out these upcoming Hudson Valley events, listed chronologically below, and all reachable by Amtrak:

Dragon Boat Race & Festival (0.9 miles from the Poughkeepsie train station): Head over to the Hudson River on Saturday, July 25 for a day of fun in the sun. Whilst boat races transpire on the water, the Asian Culture Festival will occur on the shore. Games, food and drink, souvenirs, and dancing will be available for attendees.

Caramoor International Music Festival (18.5 miles from the Croton-Harmon Amtrak station): Held now through August 2 at the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts, this international music festival offers an abundance of cultural experiences. Featuring string quartets, soloists, jazz, pop, chamber music, and everything between, the musical diversity is sure to intrigue. Performances such as Donizetti’s Lucrezia Borgiaand Verdi’s Rigoletto closely correlate with the cultural history presented by the festival’s venue.

Falcon Ridge Folk Festival (14.1 miles from the Hudson Amtrak station): From July 31 – August 2, Dodd’s Farm will host this 3-day festival at which there will be dancing, a craft village, an international food court, workshops, comedy and spoken word performances, the Activities 4 Kids Tent, on-site camping, and of course—folk music! The campgrounds will open for guests on Wednesday, followed by Pre-Fest Tastings Day and a Farm Market on Thursday. Experience the Berkshires while enjoying live music with fellow fans of folk.

Basilica Soundscape (0.2 miles from Hudson Amtrak station): Located in a reclaimed factory from the 1880s, this 3-day festival, occurring September 11 – 13 this year, has gained recognition for its dedication to music and the arts, as well as for its unique venue. Noise specialists, metal bands, and experimental folk groups are some of many types of performers featured. Reviewers and past attendees of the event have voiced a desire for more events to follow Basilica’s footsteps in creating a genuine artistic experience.

Hudson Valley Wine & Food Fest/Hudson Valley Craft Beer Fest (3.1 miles from Rhinecliff-Kingston Amtrak station): From September 12 – 13, the Dutchess County Fairgrounds will host the 13th annual Hudson Valley Wine & Food Fest and the inaugural Hudson Valley Craft Beer Fest. Numerous vendors will attend the simultaneous events, including over 150 wineries; distilleries; gourmet specialty food vendors; market vendors; breweries; hard cider; restaurants; food trucks; and food concessions. Cooking demonstrations, beer and wine education seminars, live music, shopping, and a wine pick-up service are available for attendees as well.

The Hudson Valley hosts events for all ages and interests. Take a trip to this renowned region of beauty and admire the landscape through the window of an Amtrak train in transit to any of these exciting events. Be the First to See... in NYC

New York City is renowned for its contemporary trends and upscale innovations. Each borough has fun to offer, so dedicate a day or weekend to explore the city and see these new sights for yourself:

Manhattan:
One World Observatory: Atop the One World Trade Center, the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere, sits the One World Observatory. The Observatory provides views of New York City’s most iconic sights, the surrounding waters, and the celebrated skyline. Guests are permitted to explore the three levels of the Observatory. Known for its innovation, inspiration, and magnificent elevator ride to the top of the building, this location hosts private events, so gather your friends to visit the site of the #1 most anticipated venue opening of the year.

Bronx:
High Bridge: New York City’s oldest standing bridge, High Bridge, is now accessible following its restoration and transformation into a park! After being closed for over 40 years, the bridge connecting Washington Heights, Manhattan and Highbridge, Bronx has been reinstated as a means of transportation, allowing pedestrians and bicyclists to cross between the two boroughs. The bridge will be open daily from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Historical plaques are conveniently placed along both sides of the bridge to allow for an enjoyable, informational experience.

New York City Football Club (NYCFC): With 2015 as their inaugural season, the NYCFC professional soccer team now competes in Major League Soccer (MLS), making it MLS’s twentieth expansion club. The NYCFC is comprised of members from the Manchester City Football Club and the New York Yankees, which is an exhilarating combination for MLS fans, as the involvement of renowned teams such as these is sure to amplify the excitement and fandom of the league. This club is the first MLS charter located in New York City and the second in the New York metropolitan area. Currently, the NYCFC plays at Yankee Stadium, but the members plan to have their own stadium built adjacent to Yankee Stadium in the near future. Support your city by cheering for its first ever MLS team and have a great time doing so!

Queens:

museum devoted to educating its guests on all facets of the moving image will now house the Jim Henson Exhibition and Gallery. This exhibition allows guests to explore Henson’s revolutionary effect on popular culture. The exposition features a selection of objects from the museum’s collection, including historic puppets, costumes, production design material, and licensed merchandise. Also featured are character sketches, storyboards, scripts, behind-the-scenes footage, and educational interactive experiences focused on Henson’s contributions to the evolution of the moving image.

Brooklyn:
Pattern Wizardry at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum: Kids discover the power of patterns at the visiting exhibit, Pattern Wizardry. Children will experience interactive activities such as utilizing special wands to play rhythmic beats, inspecting a 360 degree mirror to investigate the concept of symmetry, creating electronic patterns, and exploring a hands-on object-based exhibit

intended to promote children’s sense of congruency between patterns and the way they organize the world on both a personal and global basis. This exhibit can serve as either an educational foundation or extended encouragement for the development of perceptual learning skills by endorsing notions of math and science.

Staten Island:
Fall Exhibits at the Staten Island Museum: The Staten Island Museum is admired for its wide array of subject matter. This autumn, there will be several exhibits on display, relating to the unique history and development of Staten Island.
  • Staten Island SEEN: This exhibit outlines Staten Island’s exceptional history and landscape via works by artists of all skill levels. SEEN reflects the essence of Staten Island, displaying views of the natural beauty that originally attracted people to Staten Island as well as the progression to the more urban, contemporary island it is today.
  • Opening the Treasure Box: Bringing the World Home: The Treasure Box Gallery features antique art of different eras from Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, and South America. The exhibit commenced in 1912 and has gained a multitude of new pieces since. The oldest piece in the exhibit is an Egyptian statuette, dating back to the second millennium, BCE.
  • Remember the Mastodon: Diversity and Preservation: Located in the entrance hall of the historic Building A, a life-size mastodon replica dwells amongst other relics including fossils, preserved specimens, and a historical synopsis of the museum. This exhibit presents information that helps the community to understand the integral significance of environmental science and a healthy environment.
  •  From Farm to City: The From Farm to City exhibit embraces the uniqueness of Staten Island by providing peeks into the history of the island, the people who have lived there, and motifs that have proven to be shared realities.
